A teacher’s philosophy

An important quality of an effective teacher, is that she be a learner. She must hold a good understanding of the underlying theories, supporting her beliefs. It is her responsibility to stay current in her field. She should always seek to expand her knowledge, abilities, skills, insights, and experiences to learn from.

An effective teacher should be aware of her students’ knowledge, and build on it. She should be able to use their strengths, provoke ideas, and return them for further exploration. Various materials, and teaching styles should be incorporated into her classroom. She should provide developmentally appropriate experiences to support every child’s zest and thirst for knowledge.

She should care for her students, yet maintain a healthy emotional distance. By doing so, she would be able to be more objective in the observation of her students; and to accommodate their individual capabilities and interests. This also ensures, that she doesn’t cross the line from being a teacher, to being a parent.

Although the focus is meant to be on the child, it is important that she sees them as part of a family system. Their lifestyle, community, cultural context and traditions, are all part of the child’s identity.

A positive parent-teacher relationship helps a child see that, the important people in his life are working together. This partnership also helps cultivate a sense of continuity from home to school experiences. By working together with a common understanding, teachers can work together with parents to give their best to the child’s education and development.

There are many relationships and connections that occur within a school environment. Therefore, it is essential that teachers approach each and every situation with compassion, and a non-judgmental presence.

The teacher must also be mindful of other factors such as the economic, racial, cultural, ethnic, religious, language, and geographical settings that affects the child. Efforts must be made by the teacher to avoid generalizations and stereotyping. She should promote positive attitudes, sensitive behaviour, and respect through her classroom environment. Activities should integrate learning experiences, rather than ebing taught separately. This helps children develop appreciation for diversity.

Play serves as a means of learning. It is important for all aspects of a child’s development. Children need uninterrupted blocks of time to engage in play. They should also be provided with space, and materials that would lead them to exploration. Play, is a freely chosen activity, that is intrinsically motivated. It is actively engaged in by the player. Play often integrates life experiences, and is considered to be a healthy development for all children.

The quantity of information the child learns in the first few years of life is unsurpassed in later years. Children approach the world with joy and enthusiasm. They are eager to learn and take pride in being independent. Their self-confidence is reflected by their perceived competence. Therefore, it is essential that the teacher responds to them in positive terms. Teachers who are sensitive, and respond to each child with affection, care, and concern; strengthens the child’s positive self-esteem.

Much of what teachers do and say impacts the children’s self-identity. Therefore, teachers must always acknowledge their positive attributes, and work on challenging and enhancing their strengths and capabilities.
