Characteristics and Causes of Learning Disabilities

While the characteristics may vary widely, they are not physically evident. The single common characteristic, is a specific and significant achievement deficiency in the presence of adequate overall intelligence.

  • Children with learning disabilities have a several discrepancy between potential or ability and actual development.
  • Their learning problems cannot be attributed to other handicapped conditions (e.g.: blindness, mental retardation, etc…)

Possible Causes of Learning Disability

  1. Brain Damage – however the majority shows no evidence
  2. Biochemical Imbalance – although research has failed to prove it
  3. Environment

Although it is difficult, if not impossible to determine what is a true learning disability, it is important that we respond to the individual needs of any child who has learning problems.
