Selection of centres for your classroom

First select the centers to use that are appropriate for the classroom and the diverse children in serves. IT is recommended that twice the number of spaces be available in centers as there are children using the centers.

Most centers function best with four to six children in the center space, although some centers, such as Construction, may require fewer children to work and serve well.

In centers, children learn while participating actively, observing and interacting with others. Therefore, select materials and props to meet the range of developmental levels of the children. By including real objects and realistic toys, young children can select the appropriate tools that meet their needs in symbolic play. Include open-ended materials in each center for the young children who are ready for more abstract representations in their play. Scraps of wood, small boxes, and pieces of fabric inspire a child’s use of imaginative play.
