Timeframe for centre play

Children need sufficient time in a center. It is better for young children to be very involved in one center, than simply to “visit” several centers.

Sufficient time is required for the children to select materials, determine roles, discuss activities, and implement play sequences.

A minimum of 30 minutes is recommended for sustained play to occur. Longer periods, from 45 minutes to 1 hour, encourage more involvement in play. If the teacher observes a child who is having difficulty participating for this period of time, let the child make another choice.

This is done, however an an individual basis typically, “the longer the child is in a center, the more involved the play”.
