In a few male babies (about 0.3 percent) the urethral opening is not at the end of the penis, but further back on its underside. In most cases it lies towards the end but in some it is on the underside of the shaft of the penis. In severe cases, the penis is curved. Rarely, the urethral opening lies between the genitals and the anus. Surgery for this condition is usually carried out before the age of 2 years allowing the normal passage of urine and, in later life normal sexual intercourse.

The condition, even in its most severe form, does not cause infertility.
